The Genbu is a popular style of Sakimaru Yanagiba forged for Takayuki by Mr. Doi Itsuo. Blue 2 steel is forge welded to a jacketing of soft iron and hardened the old way using a pine charcoal fire and water. The profile tapers toward the tip and is slightly curved like a Yanagiba for ease of use. The choil is angled for comfort and good looks. Mirror polishing, hand engraving and a lacquered Saya complete the package. Compared to a regular Yanagi the Genbu feels a bit more substantial, owing to both its design and Doi’s signature way of forging slightly on the thicker side. Doi’s blue steel is on the hard side, clocking in at about 65 HRC. His style of tempering and annealing before that yield high hardness and a slightly coarser grain compared to others. For the user this means great edge retention and great edges that retain a bit of bite even at high degrees of polish.
Please Note: The handle being natural wood can vary in colour.
MAINTENANCE: PLEASE NOTE THESE ARE VERY HIGH-CARBON KNIVES WITH AN EDGE
THAT WILL OXIDISE WHICH CAN BE REDUCED AND REMOVED WITH THE USE OF RUSTREMOVING CREAM AND CAMELIA OIL WHICH ARE AVAILABLE IN OUR MAINTENANCE SECTION.
