This compact ‘Luxury’ knife range is the result of a collaboration between 3 outstanding craftsmen. Ohe San (blacksmith), Terauchi San (handle maker) and Kitano San (sharpener & coordinator). Each one of whom is regarded as a supreme craftsman in his own right but put together the resulting knives are amongst the finest in both function and form.
Ohe San forges a three-layer billet of steel – SG2 Powder Steel Core sandwiched between 2 layers of soft steel – on a spring hammer and then an anvil to achieve the final shape. He then tempers the knife with such a high level of technique that the different temper colors drawn across the steel reflect as a clear rainbow sheen.
Currently Terauchi San is probable the best practitioner of lacquer finished knife handles in Japan. For this collection he uses a Toishi wood (Horse Chestnut) with a 7 coating of Urushi lacquer finished in undulating grey colour that perfectly matches the understated beauty of the extraordinary blade.
Kitano San, a master sharpener, also coordinates the various stages of the knife production and the logistics involved between the three towns where each maker is based.
These are knives of sublime beauty and simplicity are sure to satisfy those looking for performance without overstated aesthetics.
